This
Sunday in Sessions Class
We
will begin the first of our three week pre-Christmas discussion
of
the new book by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan:
The
First Christmas
What the Gospels Really Teach about Jesus’s Birth
Two
of today’s top Jesus scholars join forces to show how history
has
biased our reading of the nativity story as it appears in the
gospels
of Luke and Matthew.
The
authors peel away the sentimentalism that has built over
2,000
years around this most well known of all stories to examine
“What
do these stories mean?” in the context of both the first
century
and the twenty-first century.
The
authors attempt to show that the Christmas story, read in its
original
context, is far richer and more challenging than people imagine.
On
Sunday, we will discuss the Preface and Part 1:
- The Stories of the First Christmas
- Parables as Overtures
- The Context of the Christmas Stories
