MAY 2010 NEWS OF DISCIPLES WOMEN’S MINISTRIES

Members and friends of First Christian Church have been very generous in 2009-2010, supporting the Backpack Ministry to over one hundred students in two elementary schools; making soups for Soup Sunday, which raised $799; contributing $2,150 to the Armchair Bazaar; providing salads for Lenten luncheons, which raised $2,657; contributing items and funding for kits to be sent to Haiti; and collecting gifts for shut-ins at Christmas and Easter, as well as items for Help Office and OASIS residents. Watch for information in July showing all of our expenditures from July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010 on outreach projects in our community and abroad.

Thanks to all who contributed personal care items in April for residents of OASIS, a shelter for abused women and their children. Our service project for May is Care Net of Owensboro, which ministers to women in problem pregnancies and their babies. Many of our members have been collecting change in baby bottles throughout the year; they will contribute these funds, and others are encouraged to participate in this project as well. Contributions can be given to our treasurer, Marbrey Hedges, or turned in at May group meetings.

Nelda Barnett, Sue Bethel, Carol Haynes, Marbrey Hedges, Alpha Jo Luallen, Janet Luckett, and Suzanne Willis represented FCC at Spring Conference on April 17 at FCC in Hopkinsville. During the Opening Worship, President Carol Haynes presented our Blessing Box offerings, which totaled $245 and will be used in the United States and abroad in Disciples Women’s Ministries. Conference participants had five choices of workshops during a session before lunch and another session after lunch. Topics were the following: “Disciples Women’s Ministries Study Options,” “Woman-to-Woman Worldwide—Columbia / Venezuela,” “Bible Study – Luke 10:1-12,” “Green Chalice: Stewardship of Creation,” and “Update on Church World Service at Work Around the World and Around the Corner.” Nelda Barnett assisted in registration and helped serve communion at the Closing Worship service.

All FCC women and their friends are encouraged to attend Fall Retreat and Spring Conference whenever they can; these are inspiring and informative experiences. This year’s retreats are October 16-17 at Barren River State Resort Park in Lucas, KY; October 23-24 at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg, KY; and a silent retreat (limited to 15 women) November 12-14 at Knobs Haven Retreat House, Loretto, KY. Registration forms will be available in the FCC office.

The Daytime Group will meet on Tuesday, May 4, at 1:00  p.m., at FCC. The Evening Group will meet on Thursday, May 6, at 6:00 p.m., at the home of Janey Burns, 124 East 8th Street, for a salad potluck. Note this is a potluck; we will have a regular 7:00 p.m. meeting in June. Both groups will continue their study of Joshua. All FCC women and their friends are cordially invited to attend either or both of our group meetings each month.

MARCH 2010 NEWS OF DISCIPLES WOMEN’S MINISTRIES

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the January Armchair Bazaar, which raised $2,035, and to Super Soup Sunday in February, which provided $799.  Portions of these funds are already at work in outreach projects.

In February CWF partnered with Wendell Foster Campus by contributing $595 toward contents of 27 baby kits and 182 health kits to be delivered by Church World Service for Haitian earthquake relief. In addition, FCC members and friends contributed items for kits, and several visited the Wendell Foster Campus in early February to assemble kits with WFC students. WFC CEO Terry Brownson has thanked CWF for making this a double outreach project by including WFC residents and helping Haitians too.

As reported in January, the Backpack Ministry at Cravens Elementary School serves 75 students. Now we are also serving 40 students at Burns Elementary School. Students who might lack proper nutrition over the weekends receive backpacks filled with food on Fridays and return the bags to school on Mondays. Many of our members and others in the community have helped with this outreach. We extend special thanks to Rick and Margie Matthis, who deliver the backpacks to both schools each week, and to Verne Bethel and Mike Matthews, who built shelving to provide additional storage for the food, which arrives from Evansville.

Worship Director Connie Ford has recruited leaders, speakers, and musicians for our annual Lenten devotional services on Tuesdays at 12:10 p.m. in the atrium, followed by salad luncheons at 12:30. The theme this year is “Parables – Lessons for Life.” The following will be participating:

Our Flower Ministry Team continues to arrange and deliver flowers to our shut-ins and those who are ill. Current members include Nelda Barnett, Beverly Bartlett, Kaye Farmer, Larkin Hayden, Alpha Jo Luallen, Janet Luckett, Patty Matthews, Leslie and Lynn Mobley, Ginger Norris, Gloria Strehl, and Patty Wahl. Their work is appreciated by the recipients and their families.

The CWF Daytime Group will meet on Tuesday, March 2, at 1:30 p.m. at FCC. (NOTE TIME CHANGE.) The Evening Group will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, at the home of Betty Daves, 1314 Marycrest Drive. The Scripture for March is Joshua 20:1-9; lesson topic is “God’s Concern for Justice.”

Items for Easter gift bags for shut-ins should be turned in during March, no later than the date of the last Lenten luncheon, March 23, so bags can be prepared and delivered the first week in April. Here are suggested gifts:

Spring will be here before we know it, and Spring Conferences are highlights for Disciples Women. This year’s theme is “Tis the Gift…” We have two choices of dates, locations, and keynote speakers this year. Registration forms are available in the FCC office; note registration form and fee of $25 per person are due at least two weeks before the conference you choose. March meetings will be a good time to make plans to attend.
