Minutes of the Governing Board

January 11, 2009

 

Attendance:

Governing Board Members in Attendance: Terry Brownson, Malcolm Bryant, Sally Bryant, Kristin Callis, John DeJarnette, Steve Divine, Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey, Chris Gaddis, Flem Gordon, Steve Ham, Larkin Hayden, Marbrey Hedges, Tom Maddox,  Leslie Mobley, Lynn Mobley, Hilda Nance, Tab Quisenberry, Jason Roberts, Brad Webb, and Suzanne Willis.

 

Other Members/Staff in attendance: Kaye Farmer, Stuart Gant, Wayne Goodaker, Rev. Jacob Kines, Ken Lawson, Janet Luckett, Sara Palmer, Jason Pierce, and Janice Pulliam.

 

Governing Board Members not in attendance: Cori Carter, Bill Conley, Teresa McKinley, and Nathan Nunley.

  

Governing Board Meeting:

Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey called the meeting to order at 5:35 PM. 

 

The meeting was opened with a prayer by Elder Suzanne Willis.

 

A copy of the 2009 Governing Board Structure was distributed by Chairperson Wilkey to all in attendance.

 

Minutes were presented for approval. (T.Quisenberry/H. Nance).  Minutes were approved.

 

TEAM REPORTS:

Worship:  Terry Brownson

  • Terry Brownson reported. 
  • The Worship Committee met on Monday, January 5th.   Twenty-two committee members were present.
  • The Committee has 22 team members.
  • Discussed housekeeping items including meeting dates and times, and members of the committee.
  • Planned lay leadership responsibilities for early, late and vesper services.
  • Discussed worship calendar.
  • Discussed potential activities for the worship committee for 2009.

Fellowship/Membership: Hilda Nance/Larkin Hayden

  • Hilda Nance reported.
  • The Committee was responsible for the reception following Symphony Sunday, the farewell breakfast for Dr. Steiner and the welcome breakfast for Rev. Kines.  The Fellowship Committee wants to thank everyone who helped.
  • Wednesday night dinners start this week.  Approximately 90 people signed up.  The Committee is extremely excited about the renewed interest. 
  • Larkin Hayden reported.
  • The Committee Chair will be planning for the year and defining their goals.
  • The committee has sent cards to the individuals on the prayer list and have prepared flower arrangements for our shut ins. 

Church Growth/Mission: Leslie or Lynn Mobley/Malcolm Bryant

  • Lynn Mobley reported. 
  • The Committee will be focusing on increasing our church membership.  If anyone has ideas, please contact Lynn or Leslie.
  • The Committee will meet soon.  Please review the Caller for date and time.
  • Malcolm Bryant reported.
  • The Committee has 10 to 12 members.
  • The Committee will focus on educating our church members on what we really do in the area of church mission. 
  • The Committee will be reviewing the requirements/needs in making our church a “Green Building Church”.

 Education: Chris Gaddis

  • Sara Palmer reported. 
  • Our Youth Group Program started the spring semester on January 10th.
  • The FYB club starts this Wednesday night.
  • West Area Ski Thing is scheduled for January 23rd – 24th.  Please contact Sara Palmer if you can help.    
  • The After School Program has started.  The Program needs “heavy” snacks donated.  Please contact Sara Palmer if you would like to help.
  • Chris Gaddis reported.
  • Have recruited 14 members to serve on the Education Committee.
  • The Committee will be focusing on “How to Communicate with the Congregation about our Education Needs”.  The Church needs volunteers to help the committee throughout the year; however, finding volunteers is difficult.

Finance/Stewardship/Property:  Tab Quisenberry/Tom Maddox

  • Tom Maddox reported for Property.
  • The Minister’s Office, Kids Zone, and the Flex Room have been painted.
  • All repairs associated with the September 14th hurricane have been completed. 
  • A few small projects are in process.
  • The Committee will be prioritizing the capital needs of the church during the next couple of months. 
  • Tab Quisenberry reported for Finance.
  • The Finance report for month of December and the year ending December 31, 2008 was presented to the Board.
  • At the end of 2008, the Church’s Outreach giving was reviewed.  Tab, Janice and Dr. Steiner reviewed the budget and determined that the Church could donate $6,500 to World Outreach.  The Church, however, was unable to satisfy its Outreach commitment for 2008 due to budget constraints.    The unpaid portion was $19,000.
  • At the end of 2008, the Church had approximately 13% of committed operating pledges outstanding.  If the committed pledges were paid, the Church could have satisfied its Outreach commitment.  This percentage is extremely high compared to past historical data.
  • Refer to New Business for Board Action.

Minister’s Report – Rev. Kines

  • No formal report.   Rev. Kines offered words of encouragement regarding our financial situation.

Sara’s Report – Refer to Education Team Summary

 

Other Reports:

Elders’ Report – Suzanne Willis reported.  Elders retreat scheduled for Saturday, February 21st.  The retreat will be held at the Field House from 9 AM – 3 PM.  No meeting scheduled in January.  Please plan to attend the meeting in Henderson. 

Deacon’s Report – Steve Divine reported.  New Deacons were installed.  Steve will be meeting with Rev. Kines regarding quarterly meeting schedule and junior deacon issues. 

CWF – Kaye Farmer reported.  Lenten Luncheons will begin in March.  The luncheons will be held on Tuesday’s at 12:10 PM.  There will be a speaker and a salad lunch.    February 1st is Soup Sunday.  The Arm Chair Bazaar will be in February.   

CMF – No report. 

Environmental Stewardship – No report.

Search Committee – No report. 

Old Business:  

  • The 2009 Church Celebration Team should actually be the 2010 Celebration Team.  If you are in interested in being a part of the Church’s 150th Birthday Celebration Team, please contact Amy F-Wilkey.

New Business:

  • A motion from Committee was made to pay down $10,000 on the Line of Credit (LOC).  The LOC will be paid off but will remain open and available for draws. The Motion was approved.

 

Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey adjourned the meeting at 6:45 PM.

 

Rev. Kines closed the meeting with a prayer.
