Minutes of the Governing Board
November 10, 2008
Attendance:
Governing Board Members in Attendance: Nelda Barnett, Sue Bethel, Terry Brownson, Kristin Callis, Bill Conley, Steve Divine, Kaye Farmer, Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey, Stuart Gant, Flem Gordon, Mary Johnson, Janet Luckett, Mike Matthews, Teresa McKinley, Hilda Nance, Nathan Nunley, Tab Quisenberry, Jason Roberts, Sandy Roberts, David Ruckdeschel, and Pam Woodward.

Governing Board Members not in attendance: Sally Bryant, Steve Ham, Ginger Norris, and Brad Webb.
Governing Board Meeting:
Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM.
The meeting was opened with a prayer by Kaye Farmer.
Minutes were presented for approval.Minutes were approved.
TEAM REPORTS:
Worship:Dave Ruckdeschel or Terry Brownson
Terry Brownson reported.
The Worship Committee met on November 3rd.Nine committee members were present.
The Committee planned the services scheduled for Veteran’s recognition, Thanksgiving and Advent.
Worked on a worship welcome brochure which will hopefully be available in December.
Fellowship/Membership: Hilda Nance/Kaye Farmer
Hilda Nance reported.
The Committee met on November 3rd with 19 members in attendance.
Thanksgiving Dinner will be on November 23rd after the late service.Please contact Hilda if you would like to assist with the food.
The last Sunday of December, the Committee will be preparing a “finger food” breakfast in recognition of Dr. Tom Steiner.The breakfast will be at 9:30 AM.No Sunday school scheduled.If you would like to help, please contact Hilda.
The first Sunday of January, the Committee will prepare a breakfast in honor of our new minister, please contact Hilda to help.
The Committee needs assistance with Symphony Sunday.Homemade cookies will be served.
Church Growth/Mission:Pam Woodward/Ginger Norris
Pam Woodward reported.
Outreach meeting scheduled for Monday, November 17th at 5:00 PM.
Luther Luckett Assembly was on October 24th.
The Committee worked the Pitino Shelter on November 9th.
Education: Janet Luckett or Sandra Roberts
Sara Palmer reported.
Trunk/Treat was a huge success.
FYB Club will be hosting “Green Sunday” on November 16th.The club is encouraging environmental awareness.
The Committee will implement Worship/Wonder during the Early Service.Please contact Sara if you are interesting in helping with the program.
Christmas Program is scheduled for December 14th.Please attend Youth Groups if you want to participate.There will also be a Thanksgiving Program.
The Committee met at 5:30 PM on Thursday, November 6th.
Mike Matthews reported for Property.
The Committee received two bids to repair the steeple.The Committee accepted the lowest proposal from Wilkerson Plastering.The Committee is waiting on the insurance company to respond to its calls.
Tab Quisenberry reported for Finance.
Motion from Committee to pay $4,000 on the capital debt.The funds are capital campaign contributions.The Board approved.
Motion from Committee to approve the FYE2009 budget.The Board asked several questions, which were discussed.The Board approved the Budget.
Motion from Committee to approve the renewal of the Line of Credit (fixed rate of 5.5%).The Board approved the renewal.
The Committee/Board will be sending a letter out to the congregation asking them to review their giving.Specifically, the letter will discuss our outreach needs.The letter will be signed by the Chair, Vice Chair, Finance Chair and the Search Committee Chair.
It was noted that an annual summary of “our” Outreach giving needs to be summarized in the Church Caller on an annual basis.Several outreach missions are not included as part of the Budget, thus our total outreach giving is not disclosed or presented anywhere.
The Finance report for October was presented to the Board.
Minister’s Report – Dr. Tom Steiner
Excited for our congregation and the new minister.
Encouraged us to continue with our Outreach Mission and giving.Also, wants us to continue to extend Christian hospitality.
Sara’s Report – Refer to Education Team Summary
Other Reports:
Elders’ Report – Nelda Barnett reported.She thanked Sara Palmer for her hard work and dedication.Ms. Barnett has received several compliments from people in the West Area about Sara’s work.The Elders’ are working on collecting money for a “Local Emergency Fund” that will be used to assist our members in need.Please donate to this fund by contacting Janice.
Deacon’s Report – Steve Divine reported.Refer to New Business for Nominations.
CWF – Kaye Farmer reported.The bake sale will be on November 23rd.The service project for the month is the Help Office.
CMF – Mike Matthews announced that the group will meet on the first Saturday in December at First Christian.Members from Zion and Century will be invited to attend.
Environmental Stewardship – No report.
Search Committee – No report.
Old Business:
The Elders and Deacons need to review their membership and determine who will serve as a Board Members.
New Business:
Chairperson Wilkey invited the members to offer suggestions for welcoming the Kines Family.The Family will be in attendance at the January 4th service.Jacob will start work on Monday, January 5th.His first sermon will be on January 11th.Several members voiced their suggestions and concerns.We need to respect their privacy and try not to overwhelm them.
Nominations for Elders and Deacons were presented.Suzanne Willis, reporting for the Elders, announced that Ken Lawson, Ginger Boehm and Suzanne Willis have agreed to return from sabbatical to serve.Terry Brownson, Gloria Goodaker and Wayne Goodaker have agreed to serve as elders.Ginger Norris has been nominated to become an elder.The Elders have nominated Mary Johnson and Jim Wimsatt as Elder Emeritus.
Steve Divine reported for the Deacons.Deacons that have agreed to serve the 2009 – 2011 three-year term are as follows:Brad and Ashley Webb, Ron and Yvonne Julius, John and Davita DeJarnette, Cory Carter, Jason Pierce, Robert Hines, Larkin Hayden, and Vicki Quisenberry.
Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey adjourned the meeting at 7:00 PM.
