Minutes of the Governing Board

October 6, 2008

 

Attendance:

Governing Board Members in Attendance: Nelda Barnett, Sue Bethel, Terry Brownson, Sally Bryant, Kristin Callis, Bill Conley, Steve Divine, Kaye Farmer, Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey, Flem Gordon, Steve Ham, Mary Johnson, Janet Luckett, Mike Matthews, Teresa McKinley, Hilda Nance, Ginger Norris, Tab Quisenberry, Sandy Roberts, David Ruckdeschel, Brad Webb, and Pam Woodward.

 

Other Members/Staff in attendance: Malcolm Bryant, John DeJarnette, Chris Gaddis, Marbrey Hedges, Robert Hines, Ken Lawson, Patty Matthews, Suzette Nunley, Sara Palmer, Jason Pierce, Janice Pulliam, Forest Roberts, and Michelle Ruckdeschel.

 

Governing Board Members not in attendance: Stuart Gant, Teresa McKinley, Nathan Nunley and Jason Roberts.

  

Governing Board Meeting:

Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM. 

 

The meeting was opened with a prayer by Kaye Farmer

 

Minutes were presented for approval.  Minutes were approved. (N. Barnett/T. Brownson)

 

TEAM REPORTS:

Worship:  Dave Ruckdeschel or Terry Brownson

  • Terry Brownson reported.  Worship Committee met on Monday, September 29th at 5:30 PM.  Eleven committee members were present.
  • Finalized plans for World Communion Sunday on October 5th.
  • All Saints Sunday will be on November 2nd.  Devotional Booklet being prepared by office staff.
  • Working on liturgist for the services during the months of November and December.
  • Special recognition of Dr. Steiner will be on October 12th during both services.
  • Next Meeting scheduled for Monday, November 3rd at 5:30 PM.

Fellowship/Membership: Hilda Nance/Kaye Farmer

  • Hilda Nance reported.
  • All church picnic on Sunday, September 28th was a huge success.
  • Wednesday night suppers have started.  Please join us.
  • Two funerals have been held at the church.  Mr. Morrow and Dr. Yarbrough passed away last month.
  • The kitchen was cleaned by the Weaves Group.  Pantry has been organized.
  • Church breakfast was a huge success.

 

Church Growth/Mission:  Pam Woodward/Ginger Norris

  • Ginger Norris reported.
  • Three teams have been assigned the responsibility of greeting our members and visitors.  A six month rotation has been set up.  Team 3 is scheduled to work this month. 
  • Crop Walk is scheduled for October 19th at 2 PM.  Carleigh Fleischmann and Elee Roach will walk for the Church.  If you can, please support the Church’s team by contributing or walking.
  • Luther Luckett Assembly will be October 24th at 5:30 PM.  Please sign up by tomorrow if you would like to participate.

 Education: Janet Luckett or Sandra Roberts

  • Janet Luckett and Sara Palmer reported.
  • The Education Committee met on October 6, 2008 at 4:30 PM.
  • Sign up sheets will be circulated tonight, at Sunday School and are also posted in the church office for Trunk/Treat.
  • Trunk/Treat will be on October 26th at 4 PM.
  • FYB club has started.  Very excited about the upcoming year.   
  • Christmas Program is scheduled for December 14th.

Finance/Stewardship/Property:  Tab Quisenberry/Mike Matthews

  • The Committee will meet at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, October 7th.
  • Mike Matthews reported for Property.
  • Tab Quisenberry reported for Finance.
  • Storm damage is being reviewed.
  • The Stewardship Campaign officially started on October 5th.  The majority of the advance pledges have been turned in.  
  • The Finance report for September was presented to the Board.  This month was not a good month for collections.  If all commitments are collected, then the church should meet its budget.

Minister’s Report – Dr. Tom Steiner

·        No report.  Dr. Steiner was not in attendance due to a family illness.

                                                                                          

Sara’s Report – Refer to Education Team Summary

 

Other Reports:

Elders’ Report – Nelda Barnett reported.  The Committee will meet on Wednesday, October 8th to discussion nominations. 

Deacon’s Report – Steve Divine reported.  Deacon’s met on September 16th at 5:30 PM.  Team captained approach being utilized.  Letters will be mailed explaining the role of the Deacon.  The letter will include information on the stewardship campaign and reaffirmation of your responsibilities.   All Deacons are encouraged to participate in the roles that they feel comfortable with. 

CWF – Kaye Farmer presented.  Retreat at Rough River on October 25 & 26.  Drive for The Oasis Center was very successful.  Cravens School drive was very successful.  Project for October is the Luther Luckett Correctional Facility. 

CMF – Mike Matthews announced that the group will meet in November at Century Christian Church and next month at First Christian Church.

Environmental Stewardship – No report.

 

Search Committee – Ginger Norris reported.  The Committee made a recommendation to hire Jacob Kines as our new Senior Minister.  Ginger passed out a summary of his resume.  The summary also included a detailed description of the process the Committee took during the search.  The Board went into closed session to discuss the proposed financial package.  Several questions were discussed.  The Committee made a recommendation to hire Jacob Kines as our new Senior Minister.  The Board approved the recommendation unanimously.

 

 

Old Business:

  • Chairperson Wilkey asked the Board to review the current Board structure.  A lively discussion was conducted.  Pros and cons were discussed.  A motion was presented to the Board that the current Board structure remain as is.  (M. Johnson/K. Farmer) Board approved.

New Business:

  • Nominating Committee has met and would like to present the officers for the next year.  The Proposed Officers are as follows:  Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey, Vice Chairman Flem Gordon, Secretary Kristin Callis and Treasurer Marbrey Hedges.  Motion from Committee to approve the Officers.  (M. Johnson/S. Bryant) Board approved unanimously.  Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey abstained.
