Minutes of the Governing Board
September 8, 2008
Attendance:
Governing Board Members in Attendance: Nelda Barnett, Terry Brownson, Kristin Callis, Bill Conley, Steve Divine, Kaye Farmer, Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey, Flem Gordon, Steve Ham, Mary Johnson, Janet Luckett, Mike Matthews, Hilda Nance, Ginger Norris, Nathan Nunley, Tab Quisenberry, Jason Roberts, Sandy Roberts, David Ruckdeschel, and Brad Webb.
Other Members/Staff in attendance: John DeJarnette, Marbrey Hedges, Patty Matthews, Lynn Mobley, Sara Palmer, Janice Pulliam, John Roberts, and Dr. Tom Steiner
Governing Board Members not in attendance: Sue Bethel, Sally Bryant, Stuart Gant, Teresa McKinley, and Pam Woodward.
Governing Board Meeting:
Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM.
The meeting was opened with a prayer by Nelda Barnett.

TEAM REPORTS:
Worship:Dave Ruckdeschel or Terry Brownson
Terry Brownson reported.Worship Committee met on September 2nd.
The Committee has started reviewing and preparing the services for World Communion Sunday (10/5), All Saints Sunday (11/2), Veterans Recognition (11/9), Thanksgiving and Advent.
Discussed merits of having both services during the advent season.
Assignments made/accepted to recruit early and late service lay leaders for remainder of year.
Refer to New Business for Recommendations to the Board.
Next meeting on Monday, September 29th at 5:30 PM.
Fellowship/Membership: Hilda Nance/Kaye Farmer
Hilda Nance reported.
Regional Assembly was a success.Raised $2000 for the Help Office.
All church picnic on Sunday, September 28th at MorelandPark at 5PM.Please bring a dessert or vegetable for ten people.
Wednesday night suppers will start on September 24th and continue through November 19th.
Church Growth/Mission:Pam Woodward/Ginger Norris
Ginger Norris reported.
Three teams have been assigned the responsibility of greeting our members and visitors.A six month rotation has been set up.
The Chi Rho group will work the Pitino Shelter on the 14th.
The Change for Change Program will start after the stewardship campaign.
Crop Walk is scheduled for the October 19th at 2 PM.
Reconciliation Offering is October 5th.
Luther Luckett Assembly will be October 24th at 5:30 PM.
After School Program has started.
Education: Janet Luckett or Sandra Roberts
Sara Palmer reported.
Youth Groups began on September 7th at Golf land USA.
The “Fill Your Bucket” Club will start on September 24th.
The Committee met at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, September 2nd.
Mike Matthews reported for Property.
Working on Signage inside and outside the church.Please thank Nathan Nunley, Ken and Sue Lawson for their help on this project.
Several “cleaning projects” have been started/completed.The pews were cleaned before the Regional Assembly.The kitchen is “in process” by the WEAVES group.
Tab Quisenberry reported for Finance.
Motion from Committee to pay $10,000 on the capital debt.The funds are capital campaign contributions.The Board approved.
The Stewardship Campaign has started.Lynn Mobley presented statistics and notified the Board that 25 members have been asked/called to increase their contribution.The remaining pledge cards will be sent out soon.
The Finance report for August was presented to the Board.
Minister’s Report – Dr. Tom Steiner
Regional Assembly was a huge success.
Working on improving communication with the “Sunday Special” – What has happened this week and what is coming up!!
Our After School Program is a wonderful ministry.Please remember to extend “hospitality” to the kids that are a part of our program
Excited about our stewardship campaign.
Sara’s Report – Refer to Education Team Summary
Other Reports:
Elders’ Report – Vesper’s will be held at MorelandPark during the All Church Picnic.
Deacon’s Report – Steve Divine reported.Deacon’s meeting on September 16th at 5:30 PM.
CWF – Kaye Farmer presented.Collecting donations for the CravensSchoolResourceCenter.
CMF – Mike Matthews announced that the group will meet on the first Saturday in October.
Environmental Stewardship – No report.
Search Committee – Ginger Norris reported.Reviewed some great papers.A candidate will be visiting the church soon.Have listened to a few sermons.
Old Business:
Chairperson Wilkey asked the Board to review a few changes to the Bylaws.The Changes were discussed and approved by the Board.(T. Brownson/T. Quisenberry)
New Business:
Finance Committee brought a motion before the Board.Refer to the Finance Committee Summary.
The Search Committee brought a motion before the Board.The Committee requests that the Board approve up to $2500 in “Search” related expenses.Board approved.
The Worship Committee brought a motion before the Board.The Committee requests that there be two services during the advent season.Reasons for these services were presented by Terry Brownson and discussed by the Board.The Board approved.
John DeJarnette has agreed to prepare a pictorial directory for the Church.
In 2009, the church will be 150 years old. Please let Amy know if you would like to be a part of the Committee.
Nominating Committee has been formed.The Committee members are Mike Matthews, Ken Lawson, Debby Crone, and Mary Johnson.
Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey adjourned the meeting at 6:45 PM.
