JANUARY 2010 NEWS OF DISCIPLES WOMEN’S MINISTRIES
Thanks to everyone who donated homemade food, bought items, or made cash contributions to our last fund-raiser of 2009, the Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) bake sale in November. We collected over $650 – a significant increase over the 2008 sale – which will enable us to reach out and help more people in need.
CWF helps the needy throughout the year by providing items for the FCC food pantry. We encourage all FCC members and friends to contribute canned items such as Vienna sausages, soups, and beanie wienies, preferably with pull-tab tops. Ramen noodles, crackers, peanut butter, and cereal are also useful. When the inventory runs low, Janey Burns shops for replacement foods, purchased with CWF funds. In addition to our FCC pantry, we encourage contributions of cash, food, clothing, and personal care items to the Help Office, which has difficulty meeting all the needs of its clients.
Our FCC congregation has been so generous that we are able to provide backpacks filled with weekend food supplies for an additional 25 students at Cravens Elementary School beginning in January; 50 students were already receiving food during the fall term. Thanks to all who contributed to the backpack ministry and to those who contributed items for the CWF Christmas gift bags filled at December group meetings and delivered by CWF members to over twenty-five members and friends of First Christian Church.
Our two CWF groups meet on the first Tuesday and first Thursday of each month from September through June. The Daytime Group will meet at 1 p.m. at FCC on Tuesday, January 5. The Evening Group will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 7, at the home of Suzanne Willis, 2425 Triple Crown Way. Thirty women attended the December meetings; we encourage all interested women to join us in January as we study Joshua 6:1-8, 10-15 and 5:10-12. The study sessions this year are particularly good, and Christian fellowship among our women as we do God’s work at FCC is rewarding too.
Service projects for the rest of the CWF year are the following:
January – Participating in Armchair Bazaar (You will receive a letter from our treasurer, Marbrey Hedges, explaining what this involves.)
February – Preparing food for Super Soup Sunday, which provides an opportunity for FCC attendees to purchase a variety of delicious homemade soups
February and March – Hosting Lenten devotional services and Lenten luncheons on 5 consecutive Tuesdays
March – Collecting gifts to fill Easter bags for April delivery
April – Delivering Easter bags to members and friends of First Christian and collecting canned goods for HELP office
May – Contributing to Care Net
June – Participating in global ministry (Haiti)
More details will follow in monthly columns.
Remember to “feed” your blessing boxes so that the contents can be taken to Spring Conference as our CWF’s contribution to Disciples of Christ ministries.
