Minutes of the Governing Board

August 11, 2009

 

Attendance:

Governing Board Members in Attendance: Malcolm Bryant, Sally Bryant, Kristin Callis, Bill Conley, Steve Divine, Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey, Chris Gaddis, Wayne Goodaker, Flem Gordon, Marbrey Hedges, Tom Maddox, Teresa McKinley, Lynn Mobley, Hilda Nance, Nathan Nunley, Tab Quisenberry and Suzanne Willis.

 

Other Members/Staff in attendance: Ginger Carter, Kaye Farmer, Gloria Goodaker, Rev. Jacob Kines, Janet Luckett, and Janice Pulliam.  

 

Governing Board Members not in attendance: Terry Brownson, Cori Carter, John DeJarnette, Steve Ham, Larkin Hayden, Teresa McKinley, Jason Roberts, and Brad Webb.

  

Governing Board Meeting:

Chairperson Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM. 

The meeting was opened with a prayer.

Minutes were presented for approval. Minutes were approved. (H. Nance/T. McKinley)

Quorum was established and noted.

 

TEAM REPORTS:

Worship:  Terry Brownson

  • No report presented.
  • The Worship Committee met on August 4, 2009 with 9 in attendance.
  • The Commissioning service for Rev. Kines will be held on Sunday, August 30th at 9:30 AM. There will only be one service that day.  Sunday School will not be held at 9:30. Sunday School classes are encouraged to meet before the service. Jerry Lang will be officiating.  Dr. Tom Steiner and Greg Alexander will be in attendance. Reception following service. Fellowship Team will be preparing. Press release has been sent to the Messenger-Inquirer. 
  • The Committee is working on the Advent Devotions Booklet.
  • The Committee will also organize a group to go to the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex. Will meet with Luckett Family to determine interest in attending.
  • Need to find volunteers to lead the youth during Children’s Time.
  • Symphony Sunday will be the Sunday before Christmas.
  • Next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 8th.

Fellowship/Membership: Hilda Nance/Larkin Hayden

  • Hilda Nance reported for Fellowship.
  • Youth luncheon/Sara’s Farewell was well attending with 150 people in attendance.
  • Wednesday night dinners will begin on Wednesday, September 16th
  • All Church Picnic scheduled for August 23rd at Legion Park. Festivities/games will begin at 4PM. Wendell Thompson’s group will be playing Bluegrass music. Please bring a dessert or vegetable. The Church will provide fried chicken.
  • No report for Membership.

Church Growth/Mission: Leslie or Lynn Mobley/Malcolm Bryant

  • Lynn Mobley reported for Growth.
  • No report.
  • Malcolm Bryant reported for Outreach.
  • All Church build directed by the YMCA is scheduled for August 28th. Three houses will be framed and transported to 7th and Elm St. At 6PM a worship service will be held at Max Rhoads Park. 
  • Aids Walk is scheduled for October 31st.
  • Adult Mission Trip scheduled for October 19th
  • Last Wednesday, a representative from Indianapolis’ Green Team conducted a “Green Review” of our church. A report will follow. 

Education: Chris Gaddis

  • The Education Committee would like to stress the importance of finding someone to help with the youth program during the search process.

Finance/Stewardship/Property: Tab Quisenberry/Tom Maddox

  • Tom Maddox reported for Property.
  • Parking lot was resealed. A few other small projects are in process.
  • Tab Quisenberry reported for Finance.
  • The Committee meets the 1st Tuesday of each month.
  • The Finance report for the month of July and the year ending July 31, 2009 was presented to the Board. (modified cash basis)
  • The Committee is concerned about the increase in the cost for utilities and it was discussed at the Board meeting.
  • Tab presented the timeline for the Stewardship Campaign and the annual budget.
  • Motion from Committee to change our banking relationship from Chase to US Bank (only our operations account). The Board approved.
  • Motion from Committee to amend the bylaws by granting the Finance Committee until 12/1 to prepare the proforma balanced budget.    The Board approved.

Minister’s Report – Rev. Kines

  • Discussed the importance of the Search Committee’s role because essentially the search process is the start of the Church’s planning process for the future.
  • Discussed the leadership models based on Church size.

 

 

Other Reports:

Elders’ Report – Suzanne Willis reported. Elders’ Nominating Committee includes Carroll Hayden, Vice Chair Ken Lawson, Tom Maddox, Ginger Norris and Suzanne Willis, Chair.

Deacon’s Report – Steve Divine reported. Deacon’s Nominating Committee includes Cori Carter, Bob Hines, Steve Divine and Lynn Mobley.

CWF – Kaye Farmer reported. Installation of Officers was conducted last Saturday, Carol Haynes is the President. There will be a new fundraiser this year called the “Backpack Ministry”. CWF has “adopted” 50 kids from Cravens Elementary School. Please donate to this project. If you donate/adopt one child for $120, the money will be used to feed that child for the entire school year on the weekends. 

CMF – No report. 

Environmental Stewardship – No report.  

 

Search Committee

  • Kristin Callis reported.
  • The Committee members are Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey, Flem Gordon, Suzanne Willis, Marbrey Hedges, Teresa McKinley, Terry Brownson, Shannon Divine, Mike Bruce and Chris Gaddis.
  • The first meeting will be held in the Youth Zone on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 5:30 PM.
  • Kristin Callis and Amy Fredrickson-Wilkey have met with each Sunday School class.   The meetings were conducted to determine what does our Church need from the next Associate/Youth Minister.  

Old Business:  

  • No old business

 

New Business:

  • The Nominating Committee is as follows: Nathan Nunley, Chair, Teresa McKinley and Hilda Nance.
  • Jacob announced that the Gay/Lesbian Community would like to conduct a Candlelight Vigil on our Church Property and have a reception in the Church afterwards. The Vigil is scheduled for October 11th. A lengthy and well thought out discussion followed. It was agreed that Chairperson Fredrickson-Wilkey would contact the individual that called to obtain additional information. A Special Meeting will be held this Sunday, August 16th at 9:30 AM in the Disciples Class.

 

Chairperson Fredrickson-Wilkey adjourned the meeting at 7:05 PM.
